Saturday while I was at work. One of my atheist coworker, asked me how I can believe in heaven, and what heaven looks like to me.
Over the past few months, heaven has become a more real place to me than it ever was growing up. With the passing of my mom, knowing that she is in a better place is what gets me through most days. Knowing that I will see her again someday. When I think of heaven I would love to imagine it as some huge place, filled with riches beyond measure. Everything’s made out of gold, silver, and bronze. Actually probably not bronze, because its not up to standards with the code of heaven. I’ve always had this vision of what heaven looks like. And then in this conversation with my atheist friend, my whole concept of what I figured heaven to be was shot down.
When I explaind to him my view of heaven, even as the words were coming out of my mouth it just didn’t sound right. He asked me what good it was going to be to have expensive items, if we’re not going to do anything with them in Heaven. That really struck me, because we always learn in Sunday school, and church, that we will be rewarded for the things that we do here on earth.
We always maintain this view of heaven being greater than Earth, which I completely and wholeheartedly agree with. But the truth is why would a just God give us things in the afterlife, that we couldn’t afford here. Are we just going to be walking around with bars of gold and silver in our hands just because its something that we earned? Are we going to be walking around with all of these Crowns with us, just to show off how great we were on earth? Any true account that we find in the Bible of what heaven will look like, always begins and ends with the fact that we will be worshipping at the feet of Jesus. Yes it says things about recognizing people we knew on earth, and earning crowns, but the common goal that everyone will pursue is worshipping Jesus for eternity. It’s not about showing off what you did on earth it’s not about all of the riches that you can earn, it’s about praising God with people who mean the most to you.
By the way, if you want to know what’s going on in heaven right about now, check out Revelation 4. Its pretty sick.
