So, lately all I see is arguments about Christianity, and whether or not it’s a religion; or if it’s more than that, or less than that. So I wanted to throw my two cents in. In my opinion, what I have read, and the research I have done. I believe that Christianity IS a Religion. But before you get all upset at me, let ‘s do some research, and I’ll give the reason I believe it to be true.
So in Matthew 28 Jesus says: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit; and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” So pretty much Jesus says: Go out, tell everybody how awesome I am, after they accept my bloodshed as the bleach to clean the sin out of their hearts, wash them in water in front of crowds of people; to symbolize that they were dead, and now they are alive. This is what we believe makes someone a christian. In Luke 11 it talks about a bunch of Gentiles accepting Christ in Antioch and in verse 26, at the end it says: “It was at Antioch that the believers were first called Christians.” Okay so let’s look at the definition of a Christian in the dictionary. On Dictionary.com it says the following; when I typed in the word Christian; “of, pertaining to, believing in, or belonging to the religion based on the teachings of Jesus Christ.” So if we follow all of that logic, from one thing to the next. It would seem that Christianity is a religion, right?
What we fail to acknowledge is that Christianity, what we know it as today; is a man-made religion. You see back then, as we read earlier, Christianity was very simple. Make disciples, and baptize them and teach them to follow Jesus. That was what Christianity was intended to be. A cycle of preaching and receiving, over and over. But we as humans made it into a set of rules and regulations making Christianity a religion when it was NEVER intended to be that. From the beginning, until now, it was all suppose to be about love. The “Religious” people back in Jesus’s day, were the ones who ended up crucifying him. Before that, Jesus was always butting heads with the religious people, because they were set in a their way, of traditions and rules, which is not what God wanted.
So yes, I believe Christianity is a Religion. However I think God doesn’t want us to be religious. He wants us to have a love relationship with Him. He wants us to leave our comfort zones, and love others. Preaching to them, and making disciples of them, baptizing them, and teaching them to keep his teachings in their heart.
Anyone who sets himself up as “religious” by talking a good game is self-deceived. This kind of religion is hot air and only hot air. Real religion, the kind that passes muster before God the Father, is this: Reach out to the homeless and loveless in their plight, and guard against corruption from the godless world. James 1:26-27
